Richard Hambleton, New York
|
In mid-2009, John Woodward introduced me to Andy Valmorbida and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld. Plans were underway for Andy and Vladimir to produce a major exhibition of Hambleton’s work in conjunction with Giorgio Armani in September. John had worked with Hambleton for many years and was acting as an advisor, as well as supplying Hambleton paintings to the exhibition from the extensive holdings of the Woodward Gallery. He was also familiar with my photographs and felt they might be a good addition to the show to illustrate how Hambleton’s public art appeared thirty years earlier. Andy and Vladimir agreed, and eleven 40” x 60” prints were created for the show. In addition, a handsome catalog was created to compliment the exhibition. There was a good deal of publicity surrounding the show, which in turn led to video shoots at Hambleton’s Orchard Street studio. I was still photographer on some of the shoots and in the process not only photographed additional Shadowmen, but documented the work and workplace of the very illusive Richard Hambleton. In February 2010 another Armani sponsored show was produced in Milan and five Shadowman photographs and two murals made up of shadowmen were blown up to even larger, this time 48”x72”. It’s clear that this is an ongoing project and these photographs, as well as Hambleton and his studio will yield new images.
