My family moved to Syracuse, New York in 1953, and since that time I have always had a presence in the state. I've maintained an office or a residence in New York City, more specifically, Greenwich Village, since 1967. I have never thought of myself as a photographer of the city, and certainly not the state, but all of the photographic projects I've undertaken have used New York City as a base of operations; all the photographs are processed, printed and stored in New York City. Every book and exhibition has been written or organized here. The city, and by extension the state, has, therefore, been an influence on me, as have the many wonderful photographers, gallery owners and curators based in New York City. I can only presume this will continue to be the case. In the following pages I have attempted to organize a few of the photographs into meaningful groupings, presenting them in approximately chronological order. My major New York City photographic project, a now twenty-four year old survey of the Lower East Side, will be explained and presented in a separate section.
