In 1978 Berenice Abbott asked me to look in on her old friend, the legendary and spectacularly reclusive writer, Djuna Barnes. I did, organized her financial and literary affairs over the next few years and compiled a memoir of those always interesting but sometimes peculiar days. This is the only book I have ever done that does not contain some of my photographs.
