Charlie Parker
|
In 1993 I noticed a photograph of Charlie Parker in a Sotheby's auction catalog. The photographer was identified as Esther Bubley. The photograph had been used by Clef and Verve records for years, but there was never any attribution. This led me to Esther Bubley, who, it turned out, had photographed a Norman Granz Jam Session in 1952. She took the photographs at the urging of the artist, David Stone Martin. The photographs were exceptional and this led to Charlie Parker - The Funky Blues Date, published by Filipacchi in 1995. The unique aspect of the books is that I arranged for Oscar Peterson, Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Ray Brown and Barney Kessel to write amusing or historic captions for all the photographs.
