Berenice Abbott

As a rule, Berenice Abbott did not like to hold still for a photograph, but over the years she did on a few occasions, beginning in 1979 and ending in 1991. The first, in 1979 was a formal portrait, camera set up and so forth; most of the others were at birthday parties or social gatherings. In between there were hundreds of other more casual photographs, some better than others. The reason so many worked was that we were very comfortable around one another. These are some of my favorites.
