Berenice Abbott Vols. I & II

Berenice Abbott – American Photographer was published in 1982 and had been out of print for many years when Ron Kurtz and I decided it would make sense to try and organize what would be the ultimate book about Abbott, one that would document the life and work in a suitably dignified fashion. We began looking for publishers in about 2002 and after many false starts we finally met the ideal publisher, Gerhard Steidl who not only recognized the importance of Abbott and her work, but also gave us carte blanche in the creation of the book.

The book that emerged, Berenice Abbott, was published in two slip-cased volumes in 2008. Volume One contained the Paris portraits, and all the non-New York City work Abbott created in the years 1930-1966, including her groundbreaking scientific studies from the years 1940- 1960. Volume Two was devoted to New York City, from the late 1920s thru the late 1950s.

As is typical of all books produced by Steidl, the layout by Gerhard and production is superb and is a fitting testimony not only to the artistic vision of Berenice Abbott but to the craft of fine book-making as well.
